Day 55

Date: July 9, 2011
Time: 12:54am (MST)
Playing on iTunes: "Caribe" by Michel Camilo

Location: Denver, CO Day 2

Rehearsal day! Like yesterday with the rain, today felt like another spring training day; where we have thirteen hours of rehearsal. But to honestly tell you, the thirteen hours did not feel like thirteen at all. We kept doing different things which made the day go by quicker. Who thought that a five-hour morning block would go by in thirty minutes. These are the days I love.
We kept our instruments in the gym for the night.
The corps had lots of little changes to make the show more effective. Unfortunately, none of those changes affected the pit. So on the other hand, we worked on choreography for the ballad to bring our performance to another level. The more performance we bring and the more character we show throughout the entire pit as a whole, the more the audience will be drawn into our music and enjoy it much more.
There was a lot of moving of the pit today. Hop told us there was a 91% chance of rain in the afternoon. And who would have thought, it rained. Check out some of these crazy pictures of the clouds following the storm.

With all our instruments and having ensemble in the rain, we have to take care of them to an extent even though it is still raining while we're playing. So for the vibraphones, there is a felt pad which goes underneath the keys to dampen them when the pedal is depressed. In order for that to not get water logged, we get some plastic bags used for mallets/sticks and we taped a few together to make a long strip that goes in between the pad and the keys to protect them from getting wet. You cannot see the felt pad since it is covered by the plastic (right) but it is great protection from the rain.

Another fun activity the pit did today was our second round of BMX running. Ian split up the teams a little differently this time; just random order. This is a lot of fun for the pit. Even though everyone seems to associate fun all the time with the pit, this is a lot of fun for the pit. This was the most entertaining 30 minutes of the day.
As you can sense, the pit likes to have more fun than all the other sections in the corps. During ensemble tonight we did what is called a "grandma run-through". This is where we take our shorts and pull them up nice and high while we play the run-through of the show. Honestly it did not distract any of us, at least no one on my side of the pit. It's just a little thing we like to do to have fun with everything going on throughout the summer.
